Backstrom wins William M. Jennings Trophy

Last Saturday, June 2, 2007, Niklas Bäckström attended mini-NHL awards ceremony in Ottawa along with
Minnesota Wild teammate Manny Fernandez. Bäckström was honored with his first William M. Jennings Trophy for allowing the fewest goals against during the regular NHL season.  This is a second year in a row that a Finnish Goal Tender wins William M. Jennings Trophy. In 2006 this same award went to Miikka Kiprusoff, who later on was voted also the best goal keeper in the NHL (Vezina Trophy).

Bäckstrom, who came out of nowhere to take over the starter's role when Fernandez went down with an injured ligament, also captured the Roger Crozier Save Grace Award for the league's best save percentage during the regular season (.929).

Bäckström was splendid from the time he took over right through the Wild's five-game loss to Anaheim in the first round of the 2007 playoffs.

Congratulations Niklas!
